Adelanto Walkers Will Soon Have an Official Walking Trail

Users will discover a path using environmentally friendly decomposed granite

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ADELANTO—get out your walking shoes and grab a water bottle…the City of Adelanto will open its first official Walking Trail at Richardson Park with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on May 9 at 10:00 a.m. Thanks to a generous $25,000 grant from Mojave Water Agency, a joint construction effort between city Public Works crews, Mark and Nellies Nursery and Project Contractor J/T Construction created the quarter mile  trail.

“We are continually looking for ways to improve the quality of life—and the quality of health for our residents, and the benefits of walking have been talked about for years,” said Mayor Richard Kerr.  Studies have shown that regular walking, like most aerobic activities, is good for you because cardio-vascular exercise strengthens the heart and lungs, increasing overall fitness.

Officially known as the Richardson Park Walking Trail, the trail will circle the soccer field at the Park and will be bordered by concrete.  The trail was constructed using 176 scoops (one scoop equals a tractor bucket) of environmentally  friendly decomposed granite (DG).  “DG provides good drainage, it’s inexpensive, and helps keep dust down,” said Don Wappler, Public Services Manager.

Because of the sensitive nature of DG, and to prolong its lifespan, bicycles, skateboards and scooters are prohibited from using the trail. “We’re hoping that users will observe the honor system and use the trail only for walking purposes,” said Kerr.

The park will be open to walkers of all ages from dawn to dusk.

City officials are already looking at ways to develop walking trails at other parks in the city, but no tentative plans have been announced, pending obtaining new funding sources.
